Extreme Wear

One of my clients owns three Arabian horses that are all genetically related. Although neither their work nor their environment is out of the ordinary, all three horses’ shoes repeatedly showed a similar, dramatic wear pattern, which leads me to believe that the cause, in this case, is hereditary. After a few weeks, the hind hooves were becoming extremely worn down, with the frogs, soles, bulbs and heels crushed so flat that normal shoes could not be properly fitted, while the front hooves present similar issues to those seen in horses with ringbone or sidebone.

I build bar shoes for the hind feet to allow the heels to grow down, and put sidebone shoes on the front feet to alleviate pressure, carefully balancing the hooves to deter any lameness.
